Volunteer at Crossroads

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERACrossroads relies on donations of time and creative talent as well as money. Our volunteers are valued members of the Crossroads team. To join, though, they must commit to working for a specified period of time and be at least 24 years of age.

Recruitment of volunteers to fill a variety of positions generally takes place from August 1 until September 30, and involves an interview process, volunteer orientation and training, and follow-up meetings.

Moadon (Clubhouse) Regulars

  • When? 6:30-10 p.m. on Sundays, Tuesdays, and/or Wednesdays from September to June.
  • What? Hanging out with teens in the Moadon. The TV is off; alongside youth, volunteers take part in structured games and extracurricular activities, as well as socializing and, on Sundays, movie night.
  • Why? To serve as role models for our kids and to provide an extra pair of eyes.
  • For how long? Volunteers must commit to one academic year.

Academic Tutors

  • When? 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from September to June, or by private appointment.
  • What? Providing one-on-one tutoring for students studying for the GED, SAT, Bagrut, and more.
  • For how long? Volunteers must commit to at least three months of service.

Workshop leaders

  • When? 6:30-10 p.m. on Sundays, Tuesdays, and/or Wednesdays from September to June.
  • What? Leading educational, recreational workshops for Crossroads participants on subjects such as cooking, art, computers, music, and drama. We also welcome one-time workshops or special activities on appropriate topics.

Mentors

  • When? By private appointment.
  • Who? People interested in forming one-on-one relationships with Crossroads teens—volunteers who want to do something more than just hang out, but less than provide counseling. Mentors are often, but not exclusively, people with some experience in therapy or social work.
  • What? Meeting individually and regularly with a single Crossroads teen in particular need of a role model and source of support.
  • For how long? Volunteers must commit to once-weekly meetings for 3-6 months, as well as attend specialized training sessions.

Resource and Development Assistants

  • When? Days and times to be arranged.
  • What? Helping with PR, Center upkeep, research and statistics, administrative duties, programming, etc.
  • Who? Self-motivated people who want to support the Center staff and organizers, who have experience in programming, and/or who want to make contributions of time to Crossroads but are busy in the late afternoon and evening, when our teens come.
  • For how long? 3-6 months.
